Probably the highlight of this week is the fact that Meta is willing to not only develop AGI but also open source it. This is huge for the open source community and for Meta (given they get real-time feedback) and hence can continue to build more things on top of this faster. Mark Zuckerberg shared this over a short video on Meta, we’ll share as we get more of what’s going on here.
AI Stuff you should know
Code Llama 70b, a hope for developers
Code Llama 70B is a generative AI model developed by Meta for code synthesis. It's a powerful tool that assists in coding tasks, making them faster and easier. It's a beefed-up version of the Code Llama large language model (LLM) and is designed to enhance productivity and lower barriers to entry for new coders. It can complete half-written functions, explain code snippets in plain language, and debug errors.
Stats and Bullets
Code Llama 70B is the largest model in the Code Llama family with 70 billion parameters, nearly twice the size of the previously largest Code Llama model.
It achieved state-of-the-art results on standard programming benchmarks, including a 53% accuracy in the HumanEval test, outperforming the GPT-3.5 model (48.1%) and reducing the distance with GPT-4 (67%).
The model was trained on over one terabyte of code data.
It comes in three variants: a foundational code model, a model specialized for Python, and a model fine-tuned for understanding natural language instructions.
All model sizes are available for free public experimentation and application deployment.
Business Use Cases
Software Development: Code Llama 70B can be used to assist in writing and designing software, making workflows faster and more efficient.
Debugging: It can be used to perform debugging, helping to identify and fix errors in code.
Code Completion: The model can complete half-written functions, saving developers time and effort.
Code Explanation: It can explain code snippets in plain language, making it easier for developers to understand complex code.
Code Translation and Summarization: Code Llama 70B can potentially enable new applications and use cases, such as code translation and code summarization.
Why it Matters
Code Llama 70B is a game-changer, particularly for newcomers to coding. It boosts productivity and makes coding accessible, thanks to its open-source nature. This tool democratizes advanced coding AI, sparking innovation in the field.
Did Google just open source AGI?
AlphaGeometry, developed by Google DeepMind, is an AI system that has shown remarkable capabilities in solving complex geometry problems, akin to those found in the International Mathematical Olympiad. This system represents a leap forward in AI's ability to perform mathematical reasoning and problem-solving, employing a neuro-symbolic approach that merges intuitive and rational decision-making processes. Its performance and approach have sparked discussions about its contribution to the journey towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), with some viewing it as a significant step in that direction.
Stats and Bullets
Performance: AlphaGeometry successfully solved 25 out of 30 Olympiad-level geometry problems within the set time limit.
Comparison: It significantly outperformed the previous state-of-the-art system, which solved only 10 of these problems.
Approach: The system uses a neuro-symbolic method, combining a neural language model with symbolic deduction.
Open Source: AlphaGeometry's code is publicly available on GitHub, boasting 3.2k stars and 307 forks.
AGI Perspective: Initially, DeepMind's leadership suggested AlphaGeometry was a step towards AGI, though this statement was later retracted. However, the system's advanced reasoning capabilities continue to fuel discussions about its role in the progress towards AGI.
Business Use Cases
Education: AlphaGeometry can serve as an advanced tool for teaching and learning complex geometry, offering students sophisticated problem-solving examples.
Research: It can support mathematicians and scientists in exploring new problems and potentially uncovering new mathematical theorems or insights.
Technology Development: The system's capabilities in geometric problem-solving can be applied in fields such as computer vision, architecture, and theoretical physics, driving innovation and design.
Why It Matters
AlphaGeometry showcases AI's power to solve problems like we do, hinting at a future where AI boosts our creativity across fields. It's a peek into how AI could redefine problem-solving and innovation, making the journey toward smarter machines deeply personal and exciting.
